Memories

Sometimes I post something I think may be of interest to someone other than me and has nothing to do with currents events of the day – this is one of them. If you are of my vintage or perhaps a few years senior or junior you may find this enlightening – sort of trip down memory lane. If you’re not of our vintage, you may find it boring. LOL For me it resurrected many fond memories of the days I loved and will cherish forever. I have no idea who wrote it; I received it from several friends and thought I’d pass it along. Even the photo rekindles many memories.

Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot,

Before the days of Dylan , or the dawn of Camelot.

There lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me.

For Ike was in the White House in that land where we were born,

Where navels were for oranges, and Peyton Place was porn.

We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince,

Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one’s seen him since.

We danced to ‘Little Darlin,’ and sang to ‘Stagger Lee’

And cried for Buddy Holly in the Land That Made Me, Me.

Only girls wore earrings then, and 3 was one too many,

And only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean McKinney.

And only in our wildest dreams did we expect to see

A boy named George with Lipstick, in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annette was oh, so nice,

And when they made a movie, they never made it twice..

We didn’t have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho Two and Three,

Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me, Me.

Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester had a limp,

And Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a chimp.

We had a Mr. Wizard, but not a Mr. T,

And Oprah couldn’t talk yet, in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We had our share of heroes, we never thought they’d go,

At least not Bobby Darin, or Marilyn Monroe.

For youth was still eternal, and life was yet to be,

And Elvis was forever in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We’d never seen the rock band that was Grateful to be Dead,

And Airplanes weren’t named Jefferson , and Zeppelins were not Led.

And Beatles lived in gardens then, and Monkees lived in trees,

Madonna was Mary in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We’d never heard of microwaves, or telephones in cars,

And babies might be bottle-fed, but they were not grown in jars.

And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and ‘gay’ meant fancy-free,

And dorms were never co-Ed in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We hadn’t seen enough of jets to talk about the lag,

And microchips were what was left at the bottom of the bag.

And hardware was a box of nails, and bytes came from a flea,

And rocket ships were fiction in the Land That Made Me, Me.

T-Birds came with portholes, and side shows came with freaks,

And bathing suits came big enough to cover both your cheeks.

And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts below the knee,

And Castro came to power near the Land That Made Me, Me.

We had no Crest with Fluoride, we had no Hill Street Blues,

We had no patterned pantyhose or Lipton herbal tea

Or prime-time ads for those dysfunctions in the Land That Made Me, Me.

There were no golden arches, no Perrier to chill,

And fish were not called Wanda, and cats were not called Bill

And middle-aged was 35 and old was forty-three,

And ancient were our parents in the Land That Made Me, Me.

But all things have a season, or so we’ve heard them say,

And now instead of Maybelline we swear by Retin-A.

They send us invitations to join AARP,

We’ve come a long way, baby, from the Land That Made Me, Me.

So now we face a brave new world in slightly larger jeans,

And wonder why they’re using smaller print in magazines.

And we tell our children’s children of the way it used to be,

Long ago and far away in the Land That Made Me, Me.

If you didn’t grow up in the fifties,

You missed the greatest time in history,

Hope you enjoyed this read as much as I did.

  1. Great post, Colonel, and brought back memories or yesterdays gone by but they were great and fun filled yesterdays.

  2. Ah yes! I grew up in Manhattan in the 50’s. Back then my parents would tell me to run up to Broadway and buy the night owl edition of the Daily News. I would cross a 6 lane wide street and never felt unsafe at night as a little child. There were no predators or criminals to fear. Cops walking the beat would cripple them with a nightstick. It was a calm world without cursing and fighting and you could count on Bing Crosby singing on the radio. A better world.

  3. Really brings back some nostalgic memories. Great post. Semper Fi.

  4. Hey Jim (aka: Sonny) thanks for the nostalgia, brings back memories of growing up with you in a special neighborhood we called Inverness. Don’t know if you remember a skinny kid from Beach Drive by the name of Leslie Pastor but that was me. Every few years I take a ride through the old neighborhood and thank God for blessing me with such a great childhood and a bunch of wacky friends.

    1. OMG, a ghost from the past. Of course I remember you!!!! Very much so. So good to hear from someone other than Nick Pecora, to whom I chat regularly on the internet. I have not been back there in years, but Nick sends me photos of 204 Bayside Drive, my home growing up. Please send me an email and catch up with what’s happened to you over the years. I think you were several years my junior? I am knocking on the door of 83 and live in SWFL. My email address is jb-bar@comcast.net. And yes we wacky weren’t we, oh did we fun though LOL. Have you read mbok? You should to find out what happened to that skinny boy who quite school before the report cards came out.

      1. Thanks for your response and I will catch up with you soon. Haven’t read your book yet, it is a bit pricey on Amazon but I am still hopeful to win the lottery soon!

        1. Can’t get it on Amazon, only from me. I dislodged the publisher as they were ripping me off, but bout a couple hundred books before doing so. I sell it personally inscribed and signed for $30 and I eat the postage, hard cover only

  5. Wow!! Very nostalgic Colonel Jim.
By the way how is your home remodel/reconstruction going??

    1. Thanks for asking Brad; it’s all done, last thing was window replacements and that was done two weeks ago. It’s been a long haul, and I pray I never have to go through that again!

  6. Jim, I Loved this break from the worries of today
I admit to growing weary holding “progressives” at bay
I wore my jeans with cuffs rolled up; my T-shirt sleeves as well
I record and watch those 50’s movies, like Creatures from Hell
My coffee mates complain I say “back in my day” too much
But I wouldn’t trade those memories
    For the crazy stuff today
And, I’m not too shy to say I’ll do it my way.

    1. LOL, “back in my day,” there were two types of boys, the Elvis Guys and the Pat Boone guys. LOL Guess which on I was? LOL
